Erläuterungen zum WerkMichal Heiman developed her work based on a test by the American psychologist Henry Murray, who used pictures in studies of personality. Heiman selected seventy-one pictures from a large collection of found personal photographs in which a woman is shown in a variety of imaginative scenes—for instance, while traveling or attending celebrations and events. In a one-on-one session, female visitors to the museum can simulate this experiment with a tester trained in therapy and knowledgeable about art, who will ask them about their mental associations based on the photographs. The fact that the amateur photographs appear in the context of a psychological test, which in turn is presented in the museum as an artwork, leads to shifts in meaning that demonstrate how complex the interpretation of a simple photograph is: Who is speaking, in what situation, and about what kind of photograph? About everyday photography or a found photograph as an art object? The artist opens up another source of possible interpretations with the title, which is addressed to “My mother-in-law”: Whose mother-in-law? The visitor’s? The artist’s? |
