Commentary


Lawrenz Weiner arbeitet mit dem Wort. Seine ersten Spracharbeiten erschienen 1968 unter dem Namen "Statements". Die meisten seiner Arbeiten haben den Charakter von statements, von Sentenzen beibehalten. Das gesamte Werk gründet auf Sprache, die durch Schrift manifest gemacht ist. Die Schrift ist immer auf einer ebenen Fläche fixiert, deren Größe sich nach dem Ort ihrer Platzierung bemisst. Sie trägt keinerlei handschriftliche Züge und ist immer in Versalien gehalten. Die Texte sind meistens zweisprachig, in Englisch und in der Sprache des standortgebenden Landes, verfasst. Ist die Sprache mittels Schrift fixiert, gewinnt sie ästhetische Qualität und löst subjektive Assoziationen aus. Auch das viergliedrige Ensemble der Wortplastik "To build a square in the Rhineland", vor und hinter dem Dom sowie in der Venloer Straße 40 als Bodenplastik dem Plattenbelag eingefügt, zwingt sich in die Vorstellungskraft des Passanten ein. Er fragt nach dem, was er den Texten als Bekanntes entnehmen kann und nach dem, was sich nicht sofort erschließt. Die Irritation und die offenen Fragen, mit denen sich der Betrachter alleine gelassen sieht, gründet in der grundsätzlichen Kommentarlosigkeit. Die Texte, die sich zunächst als selbstverständlich geben und dem Nach-Denken eine sichere Ausgangslage suggerieren, sind von nachhaltig bezwingender Vieldeutigkeit.
