Explanations for this object

In his Manet PROJECT ’74, Hans Haacke examines the provenance of Manet’s Bunch of Asparagus (1880). Manet’s painting has been part of the collection of the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne since 1968. It was acquired on the initiative of the banker Hermann Josef Abs, who had organized forced sales of Jewish businesses during the Nazi era. Haacke’s Manet PROJECT ’74, which drew attention to Abs’s Nazi career, was intended for the exhibition PROJEKT ’74 on the 150th anniversary of the Wallraf Richartz Museum, but was not shown there. The concept was to place Manet’s painting in the middl e of a room on an easel. Ten panels on the walls were to provide information "on the social and economic status of the people […] who owned the still life over the years and what prices were paid for the painting." In 2004 the work was ac-quired for the collection of the Museum Ludwig.
