Three lengths of paper, also printed with characters, hang from the ceiling in a broad arc. The installation gives the impression of an abundant wealth of knowledge, culture, and history. The layout of the texts and the construction of the books imitate traditional Chinese book printing and binding. But these texts remain puzzling not only to those who cannot read them. After all, the artist recompiled the characters out of elements of Chinese script so that they no longer convey meaning. The high art of the written word in China was lost in the Cultural Revolution between 1966 and the mid-1970s. During this time, universities were closed and numerous professors were murdered. This brutal political campaign was led by Mao Zedong. Xu Bing is among the artists who deal with the deep break of the Cultural Revolution. |
