Instead of regarding photography as a technical medium that was developed independently of all circumstances she describes the manifold correlations between photography and society, art, or economy. She was among the first to approach photography from a historico-cultural perspective. Until then most photo histories were written by men coming from the field of chemistry or being photographers themselves: successions of inventions and successes. It is thus no wonder that the cover of Lucia Moholy’s book shows Daumier’s caricature “Nadar elevates photography to art”. The French photographer Nadar (1820–1910) did actually use a hot air balloon to photograph the world from above. And his portraits of famous people were and still are legendary. But what he is depicted to photograph in Daumier’s image is Paris with its countless photographer’s studios. He tries to capture the bigger picture, similar to Lucia Mo-holy’s approach in her book. CommentaryDie Karikatur wurde am 25.Mai 1862 in der Zeitschrift "Le Boulevard" publiziert. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine Zeitungsseite. |
