Explanations for this object

Ei Arakawa often refers to painting in his work. In 2017, paintings by other artists inspired him to create LED installations, including Cologne of the Maghreb (Bodyphilia Song). Arakawa was interested in the fascination of the Cologne artist Michael Buthe (1944–1994) with North Africa, which is reflected in his works in a rich cosmos of materials and subjects. As a counterpart to Buthe’s work, he created an object made of dyed fabric and LED lights with sound. The lyrics of the song that is played is based on Arakawa’s conversations with Buthe’s contemporaries. He was particularly interested in the fact that Buthe’s romantic relationships with North African men and their influence went unmen-tioned in previous discussions of Buthe’s work. In his installation he presents a painter with a longing for spiritual expansion whose work does not take into account the unequal balance of power.

Commentary
