Explanations for this object

The iron form depicts a curved, lengthwise elongated, female figure. Her hands are thrown up in the air, and her double head is coiled between her legs. The Cologne artist Kai Althoff describes this creature as an ur-mother of humans who unites several human identities within herself. Here she twists herself in different directions and occupies the space like the main character in a play. The sculpture performs a balancing act, torn between its own desires and society’s expectations. Oriental and Asian echoes in the sculpture remind us that such struggles take place in all cultures.
