Explanations for this object

Today images usually come from digital sources, as can also be seen in Andrea Büttner’s eleven offset prints. She selected the subjects based on Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Judgment (1790). This text, which is central to aesthetics and, most recently, to post-modernism, searches for philosophical criteria for aesthetic judgment. Büttner has been interested in the book since she was a philosophy student. And she wondered how one would read the text in a new light if one took a new perspective on the abstract analyses combined with concrete images that Kant himself mentions in his text. Her selection of historical pictures from Kant’s library and of recent images from the Internet resulted in the poster series Bilder in der Kritik der Urteilskraft. To this end, the artist developed an illustrated edition of Kant’s Critique, which is also available to browse in the exhibition.
